In the tradition of previous Data Science Africa (DSA) events, a summer school on machine learning and data science was held prior to the main workshop. The DSA 2024 Nyeri Summer School was hosted by Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri, from 3rd to 5th June 2024. The summer school focused on graduate students, researchers, and professionals working with large datasets or unique data challenges.
The summer school featured end-to-end tutorial sessions led by professionals who guided participants through introductory and advanced lectures in data science and machine learning. There were also moderate to advanced practical sessions where participants gained hands-on experience wrangling and munging datasets, and applying cutting-edge machine learning techniques to derive insights from the data.
To ensure participants could fully benefit from the summer school, they were required to be proficient in the basics of Python programming, Data Science, and Machine Learning.
Registration Instructions
- Participants were asked to DOWNLOAD,, extract, and run the provided notebook. The notebook contained Python programming questions and hidden test cases.
- Upon completing the questions within the notebook, participants were instructed to click on the download cell at the end of the notebook. This would generate a zipped folder with a name in the format: DSA2024Test_XXXXX.zip. The characters after "DSA2024Test" formed a unique ZIP ID for each submission. For example, if the zip folder was named DSA2024Test_2024_02_15_T15_07_16_768034, the Zip ID would be 2024_02_15_T15_07_16_768034.
- Participants were then required to fill out the summer school registration form and enter the ZIP ID generated in the previous step, along with other personal information.
