DSA 2021 Workshop

DSA 2021 Workshop

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that year’s DSA event was held virtually, starting on the 4th of October, and was hosted by Sol Plaatje University, located in Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa. The organizers believed that the DSA community of both past and new participants could still benefit greatly from the virtual format.

The DSA Kimberley event consisted of oral presentations showcasing data science applications from academia and industry, as well as interactive panel discussions.

The theme for the summer school was “Women and Data in Africa.” The goal was to improve gender balance in data science across the continent by empowering women and encouraging men to embrace their role as allies. The organizers strongly encouraged the participation of women from all regions of Africa.

The event also served as a call for abstracts for the workshop. Abstracts covered relevant topics including, but not limited to:

  • Data Science for the Sustainable Development Goals

  • Healthcare

  • Agriculture

  • Wildlife conservation

  • Disaster response

  • Geospatial modeling

  • Telecommunications data modeling

  • Economic monitoring

  • New data science and machine learning methods

  • COVID-related applications

  • Language modeling

The workshop took place from 7th – 8th October 2021, and registration was open prior to the event.
